Common Questions About Medicare

Do I have to change plans every year? No. You don’t need to change if your current coverage still meets your needs. Each fall, review your Annual Notice of Change to see if premiums, benefits, or networks are changing.

What’s the difference between Original Medicare, Medigap, and Medicare Advantage? Original Medicare is run by the federal government (Parts A & B). You can add a Medigap policy to help with deductibles and coinsurance, plus a standalone Part D drug plan. Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, offered by private insurers, combine Parts A and B—often with Part D and some extra benefits.

Do I need Part D if I have Medigap? Yes. Medigap plans do not include prescription coverage, so you’ll want a separate Part D plan.

Can I keep my doctor? With Original Medicare/Medigap, you can see any provider who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans use networks (HMO/PPO), so check providers before enrolling.

When can I enroll or make changes? Most people enroll during their Initial Enrollment Period around age 65. You can change Medicare Advantage or Part D plans each year during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15–Dec 7); other windows like the MA Open Enrollment Period and Special Enrollment Periods may apply.

Will Medicare cover dental, vision, or hearing? Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing. Some Medicare Advantage plans include limited coverage for these services.

How do I avoid penalties? Enroll in Part B and Part D when you’re first eligible (or when employer coverage ends), and maintain creditable drug coverage to avoid late-enrollment penalties.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Common questions about Medicare (Part C) plans in West Virginia.

We understand that Medicare can be confusing, especially when deciding between different Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans. Here are some of the most common questions our West Virginia clients ask when reviewing their options — and how Songer Insurance helps make the process simple and local.

Medicare plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They combine your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage—and often include prescription drug coverage (Part D)—into one convenient plan.

Many plans offer extra perks that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, such as dental, vision, hearing, fitness memberships, over-the-counter allowances, and transportation to medical appointments.

Yes. Several West Virginia counties have $0 premium options, meaning you pay no additional monthly premium beyond your standard Part B premium. Costs and availability vary by ZIP code—we’ll compare plans for you.

It depends on the plan’s provider network. HMO plans usually require you to stay in-network, while PPO plans let you see out-of-network doctors for higher copays. Songer Insurance will confirm your doctors before you enroll.

Most plans include built-in Part D drug coverage. We’ll review your medication list to ensure each prescription is covered affordably and that your pharmacy is in-network.

  • Initial Enrollment: 3 months before through 3 months after your 65th birthday month.

  • Annual Enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7): Review or change your plan for next year.

  • Open Enrollment (Jan 1–Mar 31): Switch plans or go back to Original Medicare.
Special Enrollment Periods apply if you move or lose other coverage.
