Common Questions When You’re Turning 65
Do I need Part A at 65? Many people enroll in premium‑free Part A at 65. If you’re still contributing to an HSA, delaying Part A may make sense.
Can I delay Part B? Yes, if you have qualifying employer coverage from current work. Otherwise, enroll during your IEP to avoid penalties.
Do I need Part D if I’m keeping employer coverage? Only if your employer drug coverage isn’t creditable. If it is, you can delay Part D without a penalty.
Is COBRA good enough? COBRA usually doesn’t protect you from the Part B late‑enrollment penalty. Don’t rely on COBRA to delay Part B safely.
What about dental/vision/hearing? Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover these; some Advantage plans include limited benefits.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Common questions about Medicare (Part C) plans in West Virginia.
We understand that Medicare can be confusing, especially when deciding between different Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans. Here are some of the most common questions our West Virginia clients ask when reviewing their options — and how Songer Insurance helps make the process simple and local.
Medicare plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They combine your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage—and often include prescription drug coverage (Part D)—into one convenient plan.
Many plans offer extra perks that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, such as dental, vision, hearing, fitness memberships, over-the-counter allowances, and transportation to medical appointments.
Yes. Several West Virginia counties have $0 premium options, meaning you pay no additional monthly premium beyond your standard Part B premium. Costs and availability vary by ZIP code—we’ll compare plans for you.
It depends on the plan’s provider network. HMO plans usually require you to stay in-network, while PPO plans let you see out-of-network doctors for higher copays. Songer Insurance will confirm your doctors before you enroll.
Most plans include built-in Part D drug coverage. We’ll review your medication list to ensure each prescription is covered affordably and that your pharmacy is in-network.
Initial Enrollment: 3 months before through 3 months after your 65th birthday month.
Annual Enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7): Review or change your plan for next year.
Open Enrollment (Jan 1–Mar 31): Switch plans or go back to Original Medicare.
Special Enrollment Periods apply if you move or lose other coverage.
